AMA Pro Flat Track Returns to Springfield
News from MotorcycleUSA.com:

After waiting for Hurricane Isaac to wane, it is finally time for the AMA Flat Track Springfield Race weekend.

After a two week delay prompted by Hurricane Isaac, the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com and Lucas Oil returns to the Illinois State Fairgrounds for the Illinois Motorcycle Dealers Association (IMDA) promoted Springfield ST and Mile doubleheader weekend.

The weekend consists of a short track at the Illinois State Fairgrounds’ multi-purpose arena for the 450cc single-cylinder bikes on Saturday, before moving to the Holy Grail of flat track racing on Sunday, the Springfield Mile. The mile features the big twin-cylinder (750cc / 1000cc) monsters and 100mph lap speeds.

Last week’s Knoxville National shook the points race up as points leader Jared Mees (Rogers Racing / Blue Springs Harley-Davidson) suffered a rare mechanical problem forcing his Harley-Davidson XR750 to the sidelines. “It is what it is. Is shook up the points quite a bit more than I would of liked for sure,” said Mees. “We’re still in the lead, just not by as much.”

Euclid intersection is first to get motorcycle warning signs (with video)
News from News-Herald.com:

For the first time in Ohio, new signs were installed Monday in Euclid to help remind drivers to keep an eye out for motorcycles on the road.

Four of the bright yellow, diamond shaped signs were placed near the intersection of Lakeshore Boulevard and East 185 Street as part of Allstate Insurance Company’s Once is Never Enough Program.

“We’re trying to promote awareness and safety for motorcycle drivers,” said Sean Cooper, an Allstate insurance agent based in Mayfield Heights.

The signs feature a simple, three word message: Watch for motorcycles.

“Corporate found that this was one of the more dangerous intersections around,” Cooper said.

Meghan Cass, senior communications consultant with Allstate, said an intersection in Michigan was the only other location in the region to receive the signs.

Allstate donated the signs, but the city will handle their upkeep and maintenance.

“We’re trying to make people look left, right then left again, so that split second may save a life or two,” Cooper said.

He added that more than half of all motorcycle crashes, about 52 percent, occur at intersections. continues on News-Herald.com
