With summer in full swing, more and more motorists are ditching their cars and trucks in favor of their motorcycles. But not everyone is aware of the safety requirements when operating a motorcycle on post.

“Motorcycle safety requires a helmet – it’s necessary because head injury can mean brain injury in case you fall,” said Keith Coates, Garrison safety specialist.

All motorcyclists entering the installation must have the proper protective gear, according to Army regulation 385-57:

• A helmet, fastened under the chin and certified to Department of Transportation standards

• Riders are encouraged to select PPE that incorporates fluorescent colors and retro-reflective material.

• Eye protection, to include impact and shatter resistance glasses, goggles, or face shield, properly attached to the helmet.

• Foot protection, which includes sturdy over-the-ankle footwear that protects both feet and ankles

• Protective clothing, including long sleeve shirts, pants, and gloves or mittens designed for motorcycle use

In addition, headlights must be turned on at all times. Soldiers are required to follow PPE regulations when both on and off duty, on post or off. Soldiers are also required to take a two-day Basic Rider Course, provided they have not previously…………… continues on Theredstonerocket
