Iowa one of worst in nation for traffic safety laws, advocacy group says.

Iowa is one of the worst states in the nation for loopholes in traffic safety laws, according to a national highway safety advocacy group.

Iowa ranks “dangerously behind” with only five of the 14 traffic safety laws deemed optimal by Washington D.C.-based Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, a coalition of consumer, health, and safety organizations and insurance agents and companies. Having and enforcing such laws could reduce death and injuries on the roadways, the group said in releasing the 2015 Roadmap Report on Highway Safety on Thursday.

“Iowa really has some work to do to better protect motorists on the road,” said Catherine Chase, the group’s vice president of governmental affairs.

The group is urging state legislatures around the country to work on closing all of the “loopholes” as legislative sessions begin.
