Growing in popularity, trike motorcycles welcome at Leesburg Bikefest

LEESBURG — As their muscles weaken and knees begin to give out, aging motorcycle riders are finding it more daunting to balance the hundreds of pounds of chrome on two wheels.

So more and more baby boomers are switching to three-wheeled motorcycles that are easier to maneuver and easier to control in stop-and-go traffic. Central Florida bike festivals are taking notice and welcoming the so-called trikes including the Leesburg Bikefest, which will make room for the bulkier machines during the 16th annual three-day rally that revs into high gear Friday.

“In my case, the equilibrium wasn’t there,” said James Misciagno, president of The Villages Goldwingers in the mammoth retirement community northwest of Orlando and who is looking forward to Bikefest. “I felt uneasy on a two-wheeler. As you get older you tend to lose your confidence — trikes take all that [fear] out.”

Charity motorcycle ride set to help aid burned firefighter

A benefit motorcycle ride to help an injured Fayette County firefighter is planned for Saturday, May 12.

The ride will commence at Wings-N-Things on Senoia Road in Tyrone to raise money for Firefighter Brad Boemanns, who was injured in the line of duty Oct. 29.

The event, which starts at 11:30 a.m. will include free food donated by Sysco, a 50-50 raffle and an auction. Local band Tangent will also perform.

The cost for the ride is $ 20 per rider and $ 10 per passenger. Kickstands will go up at 1:30 p.m. and the ride will go through Tyrone to Fayetteville.

Boemanns was burned on over 18 percent of his body when part of the structure collapsed during a house fire.

The ride is being put on by the NobleHeroes Foundation. Funds will be used to defray Boemanns’ medical expenses.
