More women learn how to ride a motorcycle

You’ve seen ‘em. The Hells Angels on their cruisers, the crotch-rocket jockeys splitting lanes and the everyday commuters on their standards. What do they have in common – besides their motorcycles? Chances are, they’re all dudes. But why?

The number of women who own and operate motorcycles has risen through the years — up 52% from 2003 to 2008 according to the Motorcycle Industry Council, the most recent statistics available. Yet, you rarely see a woman riding on the streets, other than being a passenger on the back of a bike. Is it a skill that’s harder for women to learn? Or is it a risk they’re not willing to take?

Semper Ride Educates Marines and Sailors on Motorcycle Safety

Despite the gloomy weather, Marines and sailors gathered for “Funday at the Runway” Saturday at Camp Pendleton.

The motorcycle track day, training and safety festival featured total control clinics, as well as ramp demonstrations, street freestyle demonstrations, a bike show competition and other entertainment, in an effort to educate military personnel about motorcycle safety.

“We’re creating events that the Marines really want to come to,” said Jeff Tilton, the project manager of Semper Ride, which organized the event. “It’s not a standard safety stand down. This is a really fun event that young Marines have fun at while getting training.”

Fun Day on the Runway opened with a screening of the safety film Semper Ride, which was played several times throughout the day. The action-packed film featured professional riders doing stunts, in addition to discussing safety techniques.
