Motorcycle fundraiser for special needs baseball field

Special Photo Sponsors of the 2012 Wheels for Diamonds Poker Run are working to build a Miracle League Baseball Field in Lovejoy.

LOVEJOY — The 2012 Wheels for Diamonds Poker Run Saturday is a motorcycle ride to help people with special needs acquire a baseball field equipped to handle their disabilities.

“We need to invest in our community, to give everybody a place to go and have fun, to learn, to fellowship,” said Dawn Davis, Southern Crescent Sports Foundation Executive Director. “The benefits of having this type of park is endless.”

The Miracle League allows people of all ages with disabilities to play baseball, Davis added.

The Southern Crescent Sports Foundation, along with the City of Lovejoy, Harley Davidson of Clayton County, Old Courthouse Tavern, Buffalo Cafe in Griffin and Hooters in McDonough are sponsoring the ride.

Thousand Oaks man sets electric motorcycle records

Brandon Nokazi Miller is fast. Really fast.

Miller, of Thousand Oaks, recently broke the world and American kilometer speed and mile speed records for the lightweight electric unfaired motorcycle at the Bonneville Competition in Utah, racing his Zero motorcycle.

“This competition was by invitation only for gas or electric, any car or motorcycle, to set a record,” said Miller, who was sponsored by Mavice Custom Software Solutions, where he works as a tech director “computer geek.”

When competing for the world record at the event, the racer is required to make two runs and the speeds are averaged.

“That way, there are no flukes,” Miller said. “You have to prove that you can do it, which makes it way more challenging than I ever imagined. They give everybody time in between because the gas bikes have to be refueled or things have to be fixed. I took about an hour and a half to charge my battery and cool my motor.”

Miller’s average speed of both runs for the kilometer was 102.281 miles per hour and 101.652 for the mile.

He was trying to break a record set by Kevin Clemens in the BUB motorcycle competition.

“He was a really nice guy and very supportive, and even gave me suggestions,” Miller said.

Miller, 27, began competing last April.
