CHP launches motorcycle safety campaign

The beginning of summer brings increased activity by motorcycle riders and the San Bernardino Area California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Harley Owners Group (HOG) teamed up to encourage motorcycle safety during a motorcycle safety awareness event at Quaid Harley-Davidson in Loma Linda on Saturday, June 21.

The event brought CHP motorcycle officers and civilian motorcycle enthusiasts together for a briefing on a new CHP program designed to increase and enforce motorcycle safety throughout the area, a barbecue, a blood drive and a skills demonstration by motorcycle officers.

CHP Lt. Tel Preszler shared that within the past five years there have been 437 motorcycle collisions and 23 deaths within the San Bernardino CHP area, according to the Statewide Integrated Traffic System. That area includes Highland, Loma Linda, Redlands, Colton, Rialto and other surrounding cities.

Preszler said those numbers have been on the rise since 2013 as more people are riding motorcycles and there are more new riders and faster motorcycles than in years past.

According to the Department of Motor Vehicles there are more than 1.3 million licensed motorcycle riders in California, more than any other state.
