It is a news story we print with regret during the warm weather months. An accident involving a motorcycle claims a life, perhaps more than one life.

An article in Sunday’s newspaper put a face on the tragic news for many readers, especially those who ride motorcycles and those who love motorcyclists. Reporter Scott Fitzgerald looked back at the Aug. 5, 2012 motorcycle accident that claimed the life of Vince Ashley, who was the CEO of Harrisburg Medical Center.

Ashley, 61, died of injuries suffered when his Harley-Davidson was struck by another vehicle. His bride of nearly three months, Melinda Ashley, was grievously injured and required intensive hospital and rehabilitation care for many months. Today she has full mobility and displays signs of a remarkable recovery.

Her comments in Sunday’s article illustrated the fragile nature of life – how all that we love and value may forever disappear in just a moment.

“My husband was a very responsible driver and had even hired Black Diamond (Harley-Davidson) in Marion to put extra lights on his three-wheeled Harley so we would be very visible,” she said. “I felt safe on such a large Harley when seated behind my husband, my arms around his waist. I closed my eyes during the wreck experience and focused with all my might that there was no way anyone or anything could force my hands away from my grip…………… continues on The Southern
