River Falls Public Library’s motorcycle exhibit woos bikers and bookish … quietly

River Falls – A library is an unlikely place to see a 1934 Harley or Honda crotch rocket.

In fact it’s a good bet the term “crotch rocket” is rarely uttered inside the quiet, hallowed halls of a book repository.

But the public library in the western Wisconsin community of River Falls is currently a great place to see a small but comprehensive exhibit of vintage motorcycles for free, no library card required.

“That’s a Fine Motorbike” opened last month in the downstairs exhibit area of the River Falls Public Library. The exhibition runs through Jan. 27.

Among the 25 motorcycles: a 1942 World War II-era Harley decked out with canteen and rifle holster; a 1947 fan-powered bicycle; a 2001 Rally BMW ridden on the Baja 1000 course; a 1966 Triton 750 with a silver gas tank as shiny as a mirror; and a 1969 450 Honda police motorcycle complete with siren, flashing lights and first aid kit.

There are Hondas, Suzukis, Nortons, Triumphs, Harleys and BMWs. Two-wheeled vehicles that putt-putt and vroom, that cost a couple hundred bucks to thousands. Motorcycles that look like they’ve sat in a barn for decades, ones that look like they just finished a cross-country trip and some as if they’ve never touched asphalt.
