Safety course educates motorcyclists

Under supervision by a trained safety instructor, riders navigate through a twist of painted lines to complete the course.

The Army Traffic Safety Training Program offers Fort Belvoir Soldiers free motorcycle training courses.

The courses develop riders’ capabilities to become safe and responsible motorcyclists by teaching ways to minimize risk and handle various riding situations.

The ATSTP contractors teach the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course, Experienced Rider Course and Motorcycle Refresher Training to active-duty Soldiers, active Reserves and active Army National Guard. They are typically offered weekly at the 23rd Naval Mobile Construction Battalion located on Stuart Road.

“It’s not a bicycle with a motor on it. There’s a lot more going on,” said Patrick Gallagher, ATSTP, Cape Fox Government Services contractor and Fort Belvoir lead instructor. “You have to understand things that will save your life.”

Motorcycle Safety Day to be held at DAFB on Friday

The 7th Annual Motorcycle Safety Day will take place on Friday at Dover Air Force Base.   Dover will partner with the Office of Highway Safety and 13 businesses to highlight safe riding through training, demo rides and demonstrations.  Over 500 service members are expected to attend the safety day, which runs from 11am to 4pm.  The base has been the winner of the Air Mobility Command Distinguished Motorcycle Safety Award for a large organization for 4 years in a row.  There will be entertainment, motorcycle riding competitions and much more throughout the day.
