I would like to respond to Edward Holshey’s letter and thank Del. Pam Beidle for getting the scooter law pushed through, finally (Maryland Gazette, Sept. 12).

As Mr. Holshey pointed out, Del. Beidle is also a Nationwide Insurance agent. The new law requires that scooter operators will need to obtain motorcycle insurance. This was not a requirement in Del. Beidle’s initial proposal — her colleagues added this measure. I commend their action.

As a motor vehicle operator who is insured and under the present requirements, if Mr. Holshey collided with my vehicle I would have to turn to my policy to have my vehicle repaired. So I would have to pay my deductible. I don’t think Mr. Holshey would gladly cut me a personal check to cover my deductible for the damage to my non-totaled SUV. I feel this was totally unfair to the present motor vehicle community and now with this law we will have protection.
